Republicans Nominate Trump Again

Republicans formally nominated President Donald Trump as presidential candidate for the 2020 Republican National Convention (RNC) in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday, Xinhua reports.

In the afternoon, Trump landed at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Over 300 lawmakers gathered in person for a roll-call vote to officially nominate him and Vice President Mike Pence.

"I felt an obligation to come to North Carolina," Trump told the delegates inside a ballroom during the unannounced trip. "It's a place that has been very good to me."

In rally-style remarks, the president celebrated the successes of his first term, concentrated on his administration's reaction to the pandemic, again criticized mail-in voting, and hit out at Democrats who conducted their national convention nearly last week and several media outlets' reporting of the RNC.

He also discussed a range of economic goals over the next four years if he is re-elected, including employment growth, tax reform, reduced medication costs, and increased military build-up.

The announcement was part of the four-day RNC theme "Honoring the Great American Dream," with a sub-theme every night.

On Monday, it is "Land of Promise," which a Trump campaign official said honors "the promises President Donald J Trump has kept since his first presidential campaign."

The RNC 's opening night guests would feature former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, and President's youngest son, Donald Trump Jr.

President, who is scheduled to speak on one of the four nights at the RNC, will give an acceptance address from the White House South Lawn on Thursday night.

On Monday, a group of Republicans opposing Trump is holding "Convention on Founding Principles" in Charlotte, a gathering that organisers claimed would be an alternative to the RNC.

More than two dozen former Republican members of Congress, including former Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, endorsed former US Vice President and 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden for president on Monday.

"Today, given what we have experienced over the past four years, it's not enough just to register our disapproval of the president," Flake said in a live video on several social media platforms explaining his decision. "We need to elect someone else in his place - someone who will stop the chaos and reverse the damage."

According to the RealClearPolitics polling average, Biden, who officially embraced the Democratic Party's 2020 presidential nominee on the final night of his convention last week, leads Trump by 7.6 percentage points nationwide.

Trump, though, frequently ignored the results, suggesting that he was slipping behind.
