Latin America Now Has World's Highest Coronavirus Death Toll

Latin America surpassed Europe on Tuesday to become the country with the largest coronavirus death toll in the world, according to the Reuters survey.

More than 206,000 deaths have now been reported in the area, about 30 percent of the global total.

Brazil, the Latin American nation most impacted by the novel coronavirus, has recorded a record of 95,819 deaths as of Tuesday. Mexico, the second most impacted nation in the world, has 48,869 deaths.

The spread of the pandemic has also accelerated in Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia.

Latin America was the most troubled area last week owing to the number of incidents. On Monday, according to the Reuters report, the number of infections reached 5 million, based on government reports.

The number of cases rose after the government removed the lock-down policies to boost economic development.

The virus has infected more than 18.4 million people worldwide. The global death toll is 698,000.
