Global Coronavirus Cases Approaching 40 mn

In the midst of a resurgence of infections across Europe, global coronavirus cases are reaching the 40 million mark.

The total coronavirus cases as of Monday morning reached 39,884,616, according to the new John Hopkins University (JHU) tally.

Besides, the global death toll was registered 1,112,535 while 27,418,921 recovered.

The US reported more than 8.1 million cases of coronavirus, followed by India and Brazil, which reported over 7.4 million and 5.2 million cases of coronavirus, respectively.

In Europe, the resurgence

Italy has implemented a new set of measures to tighten controls in the wake of an increase in coronavirus outbreaks, reports the BBC.

The moves came as for the second day in a row, Italy reported its highest daily infection rate.

On Sunday, another 11,705 new cases were reported, breaking the previous record of 10,925, which came a day earlier on Saturday.

Italy was the European nation hardest hit at the start of the pandemic. It has now recorded 414,000 confirmed coronavirus cases. Its 36,500 deaths place it second to only the UK in Europe.  

As the "second wave" of infections continues to rise, a number of nations have improved their coronavirus strategy.

According to Public Health England, there have been at least 722,400 confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK. 43,646 people had died as of Sunday evening.

France saw a reported 32,427 new cases on Saturday, and there were close to 30,000 more on Sunday.

On Sunday, Switzerland responded to a sudden rise in infections by making it compulsory to wear face-covers in indoor public spaces from Monday. Also forbidden are gatherings of more than 15 people in public.

On Sunday, the Czech Republic said it would wait two weeks before determining if it needed a complete lockdown. The nation currently has Europe's highest rate of coronavirus infection and has closed much of the hospitality sector and switched schools to distance learning.

Ireland is set to announce tighter restrictions on Monday. A minister said a localised policy had not been sufficient and implied the cabinet was looking at a "level four" approach that would close all non-essential businesses.

On Saturday, Germany reached a daily record of new infections and Chancellor Angela Merkel urged people to stay at home and, where possible, stop traveling.

PM Mark Rutte confessed in the Netherlands that he should have given the royal family better advice after they cut short a trip to Greece in the midst of public outrage that they were holidaying shortly after a partial lockout had been imposed by the government.

Situation in Bangladesh  

Bangladesh’s coronavirus fatalities reached 5,660 on Sunday with the deaths of 14 more patients in 24 hours until morning.

1,274 new cases were registered by health officials, bringing the caseload to 388,569. In the country, there are currently 78,937 active cases, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

On March 8, Bangladesh announced its first cases and on March 18, the first death. On Aug 26, the cases hit the 300,000-mark, while on Sept 22 the death toll surpassed 5,000.
