Coronavirus: US Cases Reach Record High amid New Wave of Infections

As states struggle with a renewed outbreak of infections, US coronavirus cases have reached a record daily high.

The Covid Tracking Project, citing data from local state health authorities, registered 83,010 new cases on Friday.

US Surgeon General Jerome Adams has warned that the number of hospital admissions is rising, but because of improved patient care, mortality rates are dropping.

After approval from regulators, it comes as pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson restart US vaccine trials.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also warned that countries in the Northern Hemisphere are at a "critical juncture".

"The next few months are going to be very tough and some countries are on a dangerous track," said director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking with reporters, BBC reported.
