US Election 2020

Biden at 223 Electoral Votes, Trump at 214: US Media

President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden are vying for the White House, with polls closed across the United States on Tuesday — and a long night waiting for results on key battlefields on the cards.

The results are streaming, with U.S. media predicting wins for Republican incumbents in 23 states, including Florida and Texas, as well as Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio — all states that won in 2016, reports AFP.

Biden won 18 states, including his home state, Delaware, and California and New York, as well as the U.S. capital. As with Trump, all the states that Biden claimed were won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

So far, that gives Biden 223 electoral votes and Trump a maximum of 214, since Nebraska divides its electoral votes on the basis of the Congressional District (see note below).

But a number of key battleground states are still in the air, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The magic number of electoral votes is 270.

The following is a list of the states won by each candidate and the resulting number of votes cast by the US media, including CNN, Fox News, MSNBC / NBC News, ABC, CBS and The New York Times.

* Nebraska splits its five electoral votes -- two electors are assigned based on the plurality of votes in the state, and the other three are awarded based on congressional district. Biden could eventually peel at least one of these votes away.
