Global COVID-19 Cases Near 51 Million

According to Johns Hopkins University, the global Covid-19 caseload reached 50.8 million on Tuesday morning.

Since Covid-19 cases were first registered in China in December last year, over 1,262,413 people have died so far, JHU data shows.

In the United States, with 238,202 deaths, more than 10 million cases have been registered. On Monday, the nation reported 105,927 new cases with 457 fatalities.

On Monday, Brazil's nationwide count stood at 5,675,032 with a death toll of 162,628.

As India's tally reached 8,553,657 on Tuesday, the Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread through Asia-Pacific countries. The death toll in the world has reached 126,611.

The rate of the Covid-19 pandemic has started to pick up, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). It took the WHO tally just 20 days to go from 40 million global cases — reported on Oct 20--to 50 million.

According to the WHO Regional Offices, Covid-19 continues to be the most affected region in the Americas, with a total of 21,730,622 confirmed cases and 659,080 deaths, followed by Europe, which reported 13,135,548 confirmed cases and 311,336 deaths.

Countries such as Germany, France, China , Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are racing to find a vaccine as the world is trying to control the pandemic.

As of November 3, 202 Covid-19 candidate vaccines have been produced worldwide, according to the WHO website, and 47 of these have been in clinical trials.

In addition, Pfizer says an early look at its vaccine data shows that the shots could be 90 percent successful in preventing Covid-19, signaling that the company is on track to file an emergency usage request with US regulators later this month.

The announcement on Monday does not mean that a vaccine is imminent: from an independent data monitoring board, this interim analysis looked at 94 infections identified so far in a study that has enrolled nearly 44,000 people in the US and five other countries.

Pfizer Inc did not provide any more details about those cases, and cautioned the initial protection rate might change by the time the study ends. Even revealing such early data is highly unusual.
