El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua were shaken on Tuesday by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 off the coast of Central America, but no immediate damage was reported, according to Salvadoran authorities.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was felt at 6:22 pm (0222 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean, roughly 66 kilometers (41 miles) south of the coast of El Salvador.

The earthquake was initially given a magnitude of 6.5 by the USGS. The Ministry of Environment of El Salvador published an updated magnitude 6.8 reading.

It stated on Twitter that there was still no tsunami concern for El Salvador based on the examined data.

The Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates colliding is where the earthquake started, according to the military of El Salvador.

Authorities in charge of civil protection in El Salvador said they were keeping an eye out for damage in various parts of the nation.

According to Juan Jose Reyes, the Permanent Contingency Commission's early warning coordinator in Honduras, the earthquake was felt "throughout the country," but most strongly along the Gulf of Fonseca, which the country shares with El Salvador and Nicaragua.

Central America registers a high amount of seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and is home to many volcanoes.
