In northwest Mexico, authorities reported that a bus carrying both locals and foreign migrants slid into a ravine on Thursday, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and at least 23 injuries.

The Nayarit State Civil Protection Office reports that three children were among the fatalities.

The bus was traveling from Mexico City to Tijuana, located in the northwest and bordering San Diego, where many migrants try to run for their lives in the United States. On board, there were roughly 40 people.

Most of the passengers are foreigners, from, among other places, from countries like India, the Dominican Republic, and the African continent. The civil protection service stated that some of the passengers were heading to Tijuana to get into the US.

According to the news source, the motorist was pulled over on suspicion of speeding before he lost control and fell down an embankment close to the state capital of Tepic.

In Mexico, fatal traffic collisions are frequent and frequently brought on by excessive speed, poor vehicle conditions, or drowsy drivers.

Such accidents are a major factor in the fatalities of migrants attempting the perilous overland route to the United States.

At least 17 people died in a bus accident in February involving migrants from Venezuela, Colombia, and Central America that occurred between the southern state of Oaxaca and the center of Puebla.

A passenger bus careened off a mountain road and into a ravine in Oaxaca in July, killing at least 29 passengers.

In December 2021, a trailer carrying 160 migrants crashed into a pedestrian bridge on a highway in the southern state of Chiapas, leaving 56 dead, mostly Guatemalans.
