A car accident early on Tuesday in central Mexico claimed the lives of 16 persons from Mexico and one from Venezuela, according to a statement from the Mexican government's INM migration agency.

10 of the 52 passengers on the bus traveling between Miahuatlan and Coixtlahuaca in Mexico, according to the INM, were from Venezuela and had appointments to petition for legal entry into the United States.

According to a second statement from state officials in Puebla, 36 passengers were harmed and sent to the hospital after the bus crashed with a trailer in the early hours of the morning.

Nine of the injured were Venezuelan and of those, three remain hospitalized, according to the INM, which said support would be given to return the body of the deceased to Venezuela.

Local media had earlier reported that those killed in the crash were mostly migrants from Venezuela.

A video shared on X by the local Red Cross unit showed a mangled white bus lying on its side while rescue teams worked in the dark.
