Sonia Gandhi Re-Elected As Leader Of Congress Parliamentary Party

The Congress on Saturday re-elected senior party leader Sonia Gandhi as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Party (CPP), which consists of all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge proposed Sonia Gandhi's name as the CPP Chairperson, and leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Tariq Anwar seconded it. The resolution was unanimously passed by the MPs at the meeting held in the Central Hall of Parliament.

She was the head of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the last Lok Sabha and has been re-elected to the post. Sonia, who was a member of the Lok Sabha for 20 years, is now a Rajya Sabha member.

Addressing the party MPs after being elected as the CPP leader, Sonia Gandhi urged them to be "watchful, vigilant and proactive" in the Parliament.

"... As members of the CPP, we have a special obligation to be watchful, vigilant and proactive in holding him and his new NDA government accountable. No longer can and should Parliament be bulldozed like it has been for a decade now. No longer will the writ of the ruling establishment be permitted to disrupt Parliament, whimsically mistreat members or push through legislation without due and proper consideration and debate...," she said.

Earlier today, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) unanimously urged Rahul Gandhi to accept the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. In response, he told the party leadership that he will make a decision on it "very soon".

In another resolution, the CWC, Congress's highest decision-making body, termed the Lok Sabha results not just a political loss but a personal and moral defeat for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP secured 240 seats, 32 below the halfway mark. Meanwhile, Congress has emerged as the second-largest party in the Lok Sabha, improving its tally to 99 from 52 in the 2019 elections.
